Hiroko's Memory Tips:

Look over the phrases for 5 minutes.
Say them to yourself without looking at the screen.
At lunchtime, say them to yourself again. Can you remember all three phrases?

Achilles' Heel

Jane (on telephone): "Robert, can you here me? Have you arrived in Dubai yet?"

Robert (on telephone): "Yes, we've arrived and we're in a taxi. But we hit a bottleneck near the city center. It's rush hour here."

Jane: You should have taken the train from the airport to the city center. It's much faster."
The word bottleneck means the thin part near the top of a beverage bottle. When a road gets narrow and the cars don't move easily, we say it's a bottleneck. We can also say that a work project has hit a bottleneck if there are many details to work out and the project is slowing down. Rush hour means the time in the morning or afternoon when there is a lot of traffic.

Prescription drug abuse

You need to stop taking this medicine, cold turkey. It could damage your liver. Stop today.
When we say we are going to stop something cold turkey, it means we are going to stop it immediately, not gradually. It is used as an adjective, in the same way we would say "stop quickly" or "stop immediately."

This week's E-mail Phrase

in the loop

I'm sending the new proposal to you. Can you forward it to Stephen as well? He has good ideas and I want him in the loop.

If you want a person to be involved in your office communication and decisions, you can say that you want them in the loop, which means they are inside the circle of discussion.
