We had a very long meeting today. In a nutshell, we decided to open an office in Beijing. The phrase in a nutshell means that there are many parts to the story, but one important point. We often use this phrase when we are talking on the phone and don't have the time to explain the details of a decision. The original meaning of nutshell is the hard covering of a nut like a chestnut or an almond.
