Hiroko's Memory Tips:

Look over the phrases for 5 minutes.
Say them to yourself without looking at the screen.
At lunchtime, say them to yourself again. Can you remember all three phrases?

natural phrase title

This phrase comes from the days of steam-powered trains and other steam vehicles. When a project is growing and moving forward, we can say it is "picking up steam" or "gaining steam."
When a project is slowing down or losing business, we can say it is "losing steam."
Robert: Tell me, Steve, how is your newspaper business going?
Steve: Last year was difficult. There are so many free applications available for iPads that the print newspaper industry is losing steam. On the other hand, in the past three months our on-line bookstore really picked up steam."

medical phrase title

Your medical insurance will not pay
for elective surgery

This phrase is commonly used when discussing a procedure such as cosmetic surgery. It is often chosen by the patient rather than the doctor. These types of surgery are not considered necessary by the insurance companies, and therefore the patient may be asked to pay 100% of the medical fees.
Patient: "My front teeth are crooked. Will my insurance cover the cost of straightening them?"
Dentist: "They are crooked, but medically speaking, there is nothing wrong with them. Your insurance company will say this is elective surgery, not necessary surgery."

This week's E-mail Phrase

There was a misunderstanding

"There was a misunderstanding regarding the meeting schedule. The meeting will be held at 13:00, not 13:30 as previously reported. Thank you for your cooperation."
This phrase can be used to correct a mistake in a previous email without giving a long explanation. It is usually used with "regarding (X)" as above.
