Travel News wire… The Florida-based charity organization Clean the World has started taking wasted hotel soap and recycling it into 10 million bars of soap that are given out to the poor. The recycled soap bars are provided to people in El Salvador, Zimbabwe, Mongolia and Romania. In the U.S. alone, there are 4,800,000 hotel rooms. Many guests use each soap bar only once or twice. Most of the soap is thrown away.

Hiroko's Memory Tips:

Look over the phrases for 5 minutes.
Say them to yourself without looking at the screen.
At lunchtime, say them to yourself again. Can you remember all three phrases?

Achilles' Heel

Selma: For our flight to Kenya, do you think we should transit in Dubai or in Doha?

Ken: I'm not sure. The prices and transit times are about the same. Basically, it's a coin toss.

Explanation: The idea of a coin toss is to say that the chances are 50-50, or there is no real difference between two choices. We sometimes also say it's a toss-up.

Prescription drug abuse

Patient: Are you going to remove my kidney stones surgically?

Doctor Andrews: No, we'll try to avoid surgery. We will use drugs or some other non-invasive method.

Explanation: To use non-invasive methods means to help the patient without cutting the body.

This week's E-mail Phrase

itemized bill

Dear Mark:

I've received your request for money for the new advertising campaign. But I need more details about the funds. Can you give me an itemized bill with the amount for each individual expense?

Explanation: An itemized bill doesn't have just the total amount. Every small cost is listed.
