Hiroko's Memory Tips:

Look over the phrases for 5 minutes.
Say them to yourself without looking at the screen.
At lunchtime, say them to yourself again. Can you remember all three phrases?

Achilles' Heel

When someone is under too much pressure and they want to say 'I can't accept any more of this' they can say "I'm fed up." Often they say "I'm fed up with…(the thing or person)"
Alice: "You look really unhappy today, Jean."
Jean: "Yes, I'm trying to finish this budget plan by tomorrow but the phone keeps ringing and my coworkers keep asking me questions. I'm fed up with all of these interruptions!"

Prescription drug abuse

The word prolonged is from Latin, meaning to make something longer than originally planned. The prefix "pro" means to move something forward. We often use "prolong" when talking about time. In medicine, it is very common to advise patients against using the same medicine for too long. You may see a notice on a medicine that reads "prolonged use can lead to addiction" or "discontinue the medicine after symptoms improve. Avoid prolonged use."
During a meeting, someone might also say "Some of us have to be in another meeting in 30 minutes, so we shouldn't prolong the current discussion."

This week's E-mail Phrase

work out the details.

The phrasal verb "work out" is a general word that can mean to finalize, to figure out, or to complete a task that someone has been working on.
In an email, you can signal that you want to go from a general discussion to a more detailed discussion.
"Thanks for your ideas on the marketing plan. Let's meet face-to-face next week to work out the details."
