Hiroko's Memory Tips:

Look over the phrases for 5 minutes.
Say them to yourself without looking at the screen.
At lunchtime, say them to yourself again. Can you remember all three phrases?

Achilles' Heel

"For my visa interview I had to deal with a lot of red tape."

This phrase comes from the time when government officers used to tie their documents with red string or tape before filing them away. Now "red tape" means government forms and paperwork. It usually has a negative meaning, as going through all of the "red tape" takes a lot of time and is usually very irritating.

Prescription drug abuse

Some patients can become very tense when the doctor is examining them or a nurse is taking blood samples. So in order to calm them down we can say “Try to breathe normally” or “Just breathe normally.” The pronunciation is “breedh”(br?ð).

This week's E-mail Phrase

I'll check on that and
get back to you.

“Paul, do we have to submit a text of our speech before the conference?”
“Hmm, I’ll check on that and get back to you.”
Often we receive a question by email (or telephone) that we cannot answer right away. When this happens, a useful phrase is “I’ll check on that and get back to you.”
This is more professional than saying “I don’t know.”
