(all ratings are on a 1-5 scale. One is lowest quality. Five is highest quality)

Airport ratings
airport shopping 5

2 - 3

notes: The train systems in Atlanta are not very high quality, and it is common to see cases of drunk people or people using drugs on the trains. For a tourist it may be better to use a taxi.

immigration ease 2
security hassle (1 is worst hassle, 5 is least hassle)

2

notes: As with most US airports, going through security and immigration is a huge hassle. But Atlanta is a spacious airport with many shops and restaurants. It is a comfortable airport for intercontinental transit passengers. But allow plenty of time for walking to your  transit gate, as it could be very far from your arrivals gate.

Athens, Greece

City, Airport and Airline ratings chart:

(all ratings are on a 1-5 scale. One is lowest quality. Five is highest quality)

Airport ratings

2 - 3

notes: city-to-airport metro is frequently stopped for construction/repairs. Metro ticket system is unorganized.

immigration ease 5
security hassle (1 is worst hassle, 5 is least hassle)

3

notes: the passport control is usually very fast. But there can be long lines at the security check for your luggage. The departure gates are on the second floor of the airport, divided into departure sections A and B. Check your ticket to see which letter is for your gate. Arrivals are on the second floor. There is a small elevator linking the departure and arrival sections, but it is very difficult to find, so you will have to ask someone who works at the airport.

2

notes: Austrian is trying to promote its electronic check-in service at machines in the airport, but the system often has problems and you may have to restart the process on the screen several times. It is perhaps best to just go to the check-in counter and deal with an airline official. The regulations about luggage sizes are not always clear, and sometimes there is confusion between the airline check-in staff and the security staff.

For transportation to Dubai city, taxis are relatively cheap. There is a Metro, however it may not take you exactly where you want to go. If you catch a taxi from the airport, you have to pay 25AED for the first ride. You should carry cash for the ride. You can only pay for the taxi ride with cash. And remember to carry some small bills. The drivers don't always have change.

Special Tips for overnight visits to Dubai:

What you can do in Dubai for 24hrs:
If you want to see the old Arabic market, called "souk", you should visit Dubai's Deira district. This place has textiles, spices, and a gold market called the gold souk. (souk).
Of course, you have to bargain over the price. Generally, you can start from 1/3 price of what the merchants ask for. You can also enjoy riding the traditional boat, called an Abra. A one-way ride costs only 1AED.
At the gold souk you can find many good deals if you are a good bargainer. You may get a different deal at each shop; however, generally the price per gram is fixed for each day. (It is just like an exchange fluctuation). For textiles, you have to be carefully because some of the fabrics are fake! You need to check that cashmere from India, Nepal and Pakistan is real.
You can ask the store owner to burn a piece of string. If you can smell polyester, the fabric is fake, perhaps from China. If you don't smell plastic, the fabric is real.
The Dubai Museum is also a good place to visit. You can see wax figures depicting the Bedouin lifestyle and the origins of Dubai. You can also learn about Dubai's wildlife and learn about the coast's traditional pearl divers. The entrance cost is only 3AED.
If you want to get a taste of old Dubai, Mai-san recommends the historic Al Bastakiya residential area. You can find small shops selling or displaying mainly Arabic calligraphy arts along with traditional houses. Bastakiya is close to the Souk. So you can visit both on the same day. Mai-san's food tip is this: if you visit Bastakiya, you should stop at Basta Art Café to relax and chill out. Try fresh lime mint juice; it's the best!
If you are beach person, you should visit Jumeirah Beach. It's a good location for viewing the famous sail-shaped hotel, Burj Al Arab. The water is clear, beautiful and warm enough for swimming, even in the winter. But be careful - in the summer, the water is just like the water in the hot springs! If you decide to go to Jumeirah beach, you should also visit the Marina area. Those two places are close to each other. If you like the feel of staying at a resort, the Marina area is one of the best places to stay.
If you want to go to a big shopping mall, Mai-san recommends going to the Dubai Mall. You can visit the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa(it is connected to Dubai Mall), and see the water fountain show. It is the building where scenes were filmed for the movie Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. You should purchase Burj Khalifa's access ticket online in advance; otherwise you have to pay much more at the door. The water fountain show was created by the same designers who made the Bellagio fountain show in Las Vegas. The show starts from 6:00PM and lasts till 12:00 midnight, restarting every 30 minutes. Most people don't know this special tip: for the last one hour (11:00PM to 12:00midnight), you can see the fire show along with the fountain show. If you go in front of the fountain, there are tons of tourists who shoot movies and pictures, and it will be hard to see the whole show from there. But you can go to this secret best spot: it's Kinokunia's Café. Inside this book store, there is a café. You can sit outside the balcony, having some tea or coffee with sweets, and you can see a great view of the entire show.
For 48 hours, you can join a desert safari or take a one day cruising tour to Oman. If you visit in December, you can see some famous movie stars at the Dubai Film Festival.

The airline is very popular with college students and backpack travelers.
